WoW Woman of the Week: Princess Opeyemi Bright

Posted: 21 May, 2025

At just 29 years old, Princess Opeyemi Bright has carved her name into history as the youngest serving mayor in the United Kingdom. Officially inaugurated as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on May 16, 2025, Princess Bright exemplifies the power of youth, ambition, and cultural pride. Her journey into public service began at age 22, when she became the borough’s youngest-ever Labour councillor. Since then, she has been a vocal champion for youth empowerment, social equity, and economic development in her community.

Princess Bright comes from a family steeped in leadership and service. Her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, while her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a senior minister with the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Professionally, Princess Bright is a Chartered Accountant and has held positions in investment banking and tech, including as Senior Operations Manager at Uber UK. She has taken a sabbatical from her corporate role to fully serve in her new position as mayor.

Her tenure as mayor is marked by a deep sense of purpose and personal connection. Living with Crohn’s disease herself, she has chosen to support causes such as Crohn’s & Colitis UK and youth-focused groups like Ab Phab Youth Club. Her leadership is not only a political milestone but a personal mission to inspire others facing challenges to lead with confidence and compassion.

A proud British-Nigerian, Princess Opeyemi Bright is part of a growing wave of Nigerians making a global impact in politics and governance. In her words, “May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.” For her groundbreaking leadership and unwavering commitment to service, Princess Bright is our Woman of the Week.
