WOMAN OF THE WEEK: PROFESSOR FRANCISCA NNEKA OKEKE — THE NIGERIAN PHYSICIST BREAKING BARRIERS IN SCIENCE

Posted: 27 Oct, 2026

Meet Professor Francisca Nneka Okeke, a distinguished Nigerian physicist whose remarkable journey in science, research, and academic leadership continues to inspire women and girls across Africa.

A Professor of Physics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Okeke has made history in a field where women remain underrepresented. She became the first female Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the university, serving from 2003 to 2006, and later became the first female Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences from 2008 to 2010. Her achievements reflect her dedication to academic excellence and her determination to break barriers in science.

Her contributions extend beyond breaking institutional barriers. As a researcher in geomagnetism, ionospheric physics, and atmospheric science, Professor Okeke has contributed to the understanding of atmospheric phenomena and the daily variations of electric currents in the upper atmosphere. Her outstanding research earned her the prestigious 2013 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award in the Physical Sciences category.

Beyond her scientific achievements, Professor Okeke is committed to mentoring the next generation. Through her advocacy for science education and opportunities for women and girls in STEM, she continues to challenge stereotypes and encourage more young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Her journey is a powerful reminder that curiosity, determination, and perseverance can break barriers and create opportunities for others to follow. By excelling in a traditionally male-dominated field, she has shown that women belong wherever knowledge is pursued, discoveries are made, and leadership is needed.

Professor Francisca Nneka Okeke is more than a distinguished scientist; she is a trailblazer, mentor, and inspiration to a generation of women daring to dream beyond limitations.

This week, we celebrate her remarkable achievements, her commitment to scientific advancement, and her enduring contribution to empowering women and girls through education and research.
