WOMAN OF THE WEEK: ESTHER MAHLANGU

Posted: 24 Jun, 2026

At 90 years old, Esther Mahlangu remains a powerful symbol of cultural preservation, creativity, and African excellence.

Born in Mpumalanga, South Africa, in 1935, Mahlangu learned the traditional Ndebele art form from her mother and grandmother. What began as a cultural practice of decorating family homes with bold geometric patterns, vibrant colours, and symbolic designs became a lifelong mission to preserve and celebrate her heritage.

Over the decades, her work has transcended borders, appearing on museum walls, aircraft, global exhibitions, and even the iconic BMW Art Car, making her the first woman and first African artist commissioned for the prestigious project.

Despite international acclaim, Esther Mahlangu has remained deeply committed to the roots of her craft. Through her art, she continues to tell the story of the Ndebele people, ensuring that future generations understand the value of culture, identity, and tradition.

Her journey reminds us that true success is not only about gaining global recognition but also about staying connected to one’s heritage and using one’s gifts to inspire and educate others.

Women of Will celebrates Esther Mahlangu as our Woman of the Week—a trailblazer whose legacy proves that culture is not merely inherited; it is preserved through purpose, passion, and perseverance.
