Nigeria Clinch Historic 15th African Women’s Wrestling Title in Egypt

Nigeria’s women’s wrestling team has reaffirmed its dominance on the continent, securing a record-extending 15th title at the African Wrestling Championships 2026 held in Alexandria, Egypt.

The Nigerian team delivered an outstanding performance, winning eight gold medals and two silver medals across the ten weight categories to emerge overall champions. This commanding display once again highlights the country’s superiority in women’s wrestling across Africa.

Top performers included Mercy Genesis (50kg), Christianah Ogunsanya (53kg), Adijat Idris (55kg), and Mercy Adekuoroye (65kg), all of whom secured gold medals in their respective categories.

Additional gold medals came from Esther Asaolu (59kg), Esther Kolawole (62kg), Jumoke Adekoye (57kg), and Damola Ojo (76kg), further showcasing the depth and strength of the Nigerian squad.

Although Nigeria narrowly missed a clean sweep, Ebi Biogos and Hannah Reuben earned silver medals, reinforcing the team’s competitiveness across all divisions.

In the men’s freestyle category, Nigeria also recorded success, with Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo winning gold in the 97kg division and helping the men’s team finish third overall.

This latest victory further cements Nigeria’s position as a powerhouse in African wrestling, as the women’s team continues to set the standard for excellence on the continent.
