Karen Kaphale has made history by becoming Malawi’s first international motorsport driver, marking a significant milestone for the country’s sporting landscape. The 22-year-old racer is breaking new ground in a discipline that has had little representation from Malawi, inspiring a new generation of aspiring drivers.

Kaphale’s journey began with a passion for motorsport that led her to seek opportunities beyond Malawi’s borders. In 2024, she travelled to South Africa to train with WORR Motorsport, where she developed her racing skills and earned praise for her rapid progress.

She later obtained her racing licence and made her competitive debut in the OK-Junior karting category, competing at renowned South African circuits, including Red Star Raceway.

Despite facing challenges such as limited motorsport infrastructure in Malawi and the high costs associated with racing, Kaphale has remained determined to pursue her dream.

She has also partnered with local karting initiatives to help identify and nurture young talent, aiming to create pathways for future Malawian racers.

Looking ahead, Kaphale hopes to progress into international car racing while proudly representing Malawi on the global stage.
Beyond her personal ambitions, she is committed to encouraging more women and young people to pursue careers in motorsport, proving that determination and perseverance can overcome barriers in even the most unconventional sports.
