This week, we celebrate three inspiring young Black women from Atlanta who are breaking barriers, redefining inclusion, and transforming the beauty industry on their own terms. Aaliyah Alicia Thompson and twin sisters Anajiah Byrd and Aniah Byrd are autistic entrepreneurs making history through passion, resilience, and purpose.
At just 21 years old, Aaliyah became the first woman with autism in the United States to open her own beauty bar, creating a powerful example of representation and possibility for neurodivergent communities. Together, the trio launched Aaliyah’s Beauty Bar, a thriving salon specializing in natural hair care, loc services, makeup, nails, extensions, and retwists.
Determined to create opportunities for others like themselves, the young entrepreneurs expanded their vision by opening a groundbreaking beauty and nail school in Jonesboro. Their school focuses on training autistic and neurodivergent youth in professional hairstyling and nail care while offering scholarships to help students build successful careers in the beauty industry.

What makes their journey even more remarkable is their mission to challenge systems that often exclude neurodivergent individuals. Frustrated by traditional cosmetology licensing pathways that lacked accessibility and inclusion, they built a supportive environment designed around creativity, empowerment, and acceptance. Their business has become more than a salon — it is a sanctuary where students and clients feel seen, valued, and encouraged to thrive.
Supported by Aaliyah’s mother, Patricia Terry, the trio continues to inspire communities across the country with their determination and leadership. Their impact has earned national recognition, including Aaliyah being honored as a McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden Change Leader and receiving a $10,000 grant at the 2023 AfroTech Conference 2023.
Through courage, innovation, and community service, these remarkable women are proving that barriers can be broken and dreams can be achieved regardless of circumstance. They are not only building businesses — they are creating pathways for future generations.
