Woman of the Week: AIG Dr. Aishatu Abubakar-Baju — Trailblazer of Inclusive Policing and Empowerment

Posted: 20 Aug, 2025

From humble beginnings in Biu, Borno State, under the nurturing care of her grandmother in Adamawa, AIG Dr. Aishatu Abubakar-Baju has risen to become Nigeria’s most senior female police officer—a testament to her courage, intellect, and unwavering resolve.

Her journey began in 1995, after earning a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and completing her NYSC assignment with the Nigeria Police Force. It was there she discovered her passion for service, a decision that would shape her remarkable career. In 2005, she was awarded the prestigious UNESCO-L’Oréal Fellowship for Young Women in Science for her groundbreaking PhD research on molecular epidemiology linking bovine and human tuberculosis—an accolade that placed her on the global stage.

Over nearly three decades, Dr. Abubakar-Baju has combined scientific expertise, reformist vision, and operational leadership. She once headed the Force Animal Branch, where she pioneered Nigeria’s first police dog and horse breeding center, strengthening the country’s security infrastructure. Beyond policing, she has also made her mark in academia and veterinary regulation, serving as the first woman President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria since its establishment in 1953. Under her leadership, the council has championed reforms in veterinary education and standards, raising the profile of animal health and scientific innovation in the country.

Perhaps her most significant contribution lies in her advocacy for gender equity within the police. She was instrumental in removing discriminatory provisions from the Police Act that allowed for the dismissal of unmarried pregnant officers. She also spearheaded the creation of a Gender Policy for the Force, expanding gender desks across all 36 states and extending them to divisional levels. These reforms have marked a turning point in inclusive policing, ensuring fairer opportunities for women in law enforcement.

Dr. Abubakar-Baju’s excellence has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, she received the “Evergreen Female Security Person of the Year” award at the African Iconic Women Recognition Awards. She has also been honored by numerous professional and advocacy groups for her leadership, innovation, and commitment to women’s rights.

Today, AIG Dr. Aishatu Abubakar-Baju stands as a symbol of strength, intellect, and transformation. By reshaping institutions, mentoring the next generation, and breaking gender barriers, she is paving the way for what she confidently describes as inevitable—the day Nigeria produces its first female Inspector-General of Police.
