International Women’s Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8, is a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call to action for gender equality. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” highlights the urgent need to advance gender parity more rapidly. According to International Women’s Day, progress toward full gender equality is projected to take until 2158 at the current pace, making it essential to implement immediate and effective measures to eliminate systemic barriers and biases.
Around the world, various initiatives mark IWD 2025. The United Nations commemorates the day under the theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in gender equality efforts.
In Nigeria, IWD 2025 focuses on recognizing women making strides in sports. Rena Wakama, head coach of D’Tigress, led Nigeria’s women’s basketball team to a historic Olympic performance and was honored as the best female basketball coach. Additionally, eight Nigerian women who have significantly impacted the global sports scene are being celebrated for inspiring future generations. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also reinforced the importance of moving beyond rhetoric to implement policies that empower women and address gender-based inequalities.
The “Accelerate Action” campaign calls for collective efforts to make faster, more effective strides toward gender equality. By embracing this theme, individuals and organizations are encouraged to address biases, create equitable opportunities, and implement policies that support women’s progress.. As we celebrate IWD 2025, the focus remains on ensuring that every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive, contributing to a more just and equitable society.
