Temitope Adeshina etched her name into Nigeria’s sporting history after becoming the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the high jump. The 27-year-old claimed bronze in the women’s event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, clearing 1.90 metres to secure a place on the podium.

Adeshina finished behind Australia’s Eleanor Patterson, who won gold with a Games record-equalling jump of 1.96m, while fellow Australian Nicola Olyslagers took silver. The Nigerian’s bronze also ended the country’s 72-year wait for a Commonwealth medal in the high jump, dating back to Emmanuel Ifeajuna’s historic gold at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

The medal adds another landmark achievement to Adeshina’s impressive career, having previously set the Nigerian high jump record of 1.97m and represented the country at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Her success in Glasgow further strengthens Nigeria’s athletics campaign and highlights the country’s growing presence in field events on the international stage.
