Success is often defined by the courage to dream beyond limitations. For Dr. Wendy Okolo, that dream took her from Lagos, Nigeria, to the forefront of aerospace innovation at NASA, where she continues to inspire millions with her brilliance, resilience, and groundbreaking achievements.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Wendy attended Queen’s College, Lagos, before pursuing higher education in the United States. She earned both her bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. At just 26 years old, she made history as the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, breaking barriers in a field where women, particularly Black women, remain underrepresented.

Today, Dr. Okolo is an aerospace research engineer and associate project manager at NASA’s Ames Research Center. Her work focuses on aerospace vehicle controls, flight safety, autonomous systems, and technologies that make future air and space transportation safer and more efficient. She has also contributed to cutting-edge research with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and Lockheed Martin, including work on NASA’s Orion spacecraft.

Her excellence has earned her numerous prestigious honours, including the NASA Exceptional Technology Achievement Medal, the NASA Ames Researcher/Scientist Award, the NASA Ames Early Career Researcher Award, the Women in Aerospace Award for Initiative, Inspiration & Impact and the Black Engineer of the Year Award as the Most Promising Engineer in the U.S. Government.

Beyond her technical accomplishments, Wendy is a passionate advocate for STEM education and diversity in science and engineering. Through mentorship, public speaking, and her bestselling book Learn to Fly, she encourages young people—especially girls and Africans—to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, proving that talent knows no boundaries.
